Riley Dolezal came from behind to claim the javelin title at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships on Sunday afternoon, earning his second career bid to the IAAF World Championships in the process.
In a unique javelin competition that spanned two days due to a weather delay, Dolezal emerged victorious with a throw of 260-2 (79.30m). Competitors took their first three throws on Saturday evening, but inclement weather forced a delay of the final three attempts to Sunday afternoon. Dolezal trailed Cuba's Guillermo Martinez overnight, but he launched himself into first place with his first throw on Sunday and ultimately earned the gold medal.
In order to meet the World Championships qualifying criteria, Dolezal needed to either win the NACAC title or throw at least 82 meters to secure his spot on Team USA.
Dolezal, a native of Stanley, N.D., also represented the USA at the most recent edition of the World Championships in 2013 – the world's most prestigious track & field meet outside of the Olympic Games. In 2015, he has earned runner-up finishes at the USATF Championships and the Pan American Games.
Dolezal's NACAC winning throw was also a new meet record, breaking the mark previously held by NDSU assistant coach
Justin St. Clair since 2007.
The North Dakota State track & field program will be represented by three athletes at the World Championships, with current runner Erin Teschuk competing in the 3,000m steeplechase for Canada and Bison assistant coach
Trevor Barry competing in the high jump for the Bahamas. Dolezal currently serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bison.
The IAAF World Championships will be held at Beijing National Stadium – also known as the Bird's Nest – from August 22-30.
