DES MOINES, Iowa – Former North Dakota State track & field athlete Riley Dolezal won a national title in the javelin at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday, June 23 at Drake Stadium.

Dolezal's winning throw of 273-11 (83.50m) was a lifetime best by 30 feet, 5 inches. It also met the 'A' standard for the World Championships, meaning Dolezal will be a member of Team USA on August 15 in Moscow, Russia, at the world's premier track & field competition.

Dolezal (Stanley, N.D.) entered the USA Championships with the 14th-best qualifying mark in the javelin. He posted lifetime best efforts on all four of his attempts, with the winner coming on the fourth and final attempt. With the lead in hand, Dolezal passed on what would have been his fifth and sixth attempts.

Dolezal's effort today ranks him eighth in American history in the javelin, and would have placed fourth at the 2012 Olympics. He now ranks 16th in the world this year.

Dolezal was one of 22 men accepted into the men's javelin competition after posting a season-best throw of 243-6 (74.22m) at the Drake Relays in April. He competed for NDSU from 2005-09, winning a Summit League javelin title in 2008. A Stanley, N.D., native, Dolezal still holds the NDSU school and facility records in the javelin.
