SPARTANBURG, S.C.--North Dakota State is ranked No.1 in the FCS Coaches Poll for the fifth straight week with 17 first place votes and 684 points. The Bison rallied from a 22-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Cal Poly. Quarterback Steve Walker completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kole Heckendorf with 38 seconds left for a 31-28 win. The Bison have been No. 1 in the coaches poll for six weeks.
For the second straight year, North Dakota State (10-0, 3-0 Great West) and South Dakota State (6-4, 3-0 Great West) will square off for the conference championship. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings, S.D.
Also receiving first place votes were Northern Iowa, with seven first place votes and 671 points in second, and Montana in third with four first place votes and 622 points. McNeese State, Southern Illinois, Appalachian State, Massachusetts, Richmond,
Delaware and Delaware State round out the top 10.
Colonial Athletic Association placed six teams in the top 25. The Gateway Conference and the Southern Conference have three teams in the top 25. Three conferences have two teams and six conferences have one team in the top 25.
FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
The poll is available on the newly-created FCS web page that features the poll, conference scores and standings, and features on FCS programs and players. The Southern Conference oversees the poll and maintains the web site.
