  • Title
Associate Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator/Tight Ends and Fullbacks

Tyler Roehl, an All-America running back and four-year letterman at North Dakota State from 2004 to 2008, returned to his alma mater as the tight ends and fullbacks coach in 2014. He was elevated to offensive coordinator in 2019 under head coach Matt Entz.

Roehl was named associate head coach in January 2024 under new head coach Tim Polasek before resigning to accept a job at Tennessee State as associate head coach and offensive coordinator.

A fullback on NDSU's 2006 Great West Football Conference championship team, Roehl was part of NDSU's 2011 national championship team as an offensive graduate assistant. He won seven FCS titles and eight Missouri Valley Football Conference titles with the Bison.

Roehl directed one of the most prolific offenses in the FCS during the 2023 season. The Bison ranked first in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and offensive touchdowns; second in completion percentage, passing efficiency and red-zone scoring; third in scoring offense and third-down conversion percentage; and fourth in rushing offense.

North Dakota State led the nation in rushing touchdowns three straight seasons and ranked first or second in rushing yards four of Roehl's five seasons as offensive coordinator.

NDSU was one of the most explosive offensive teams in the nation in 2019, Roehl's first year as the offensive play caller. The Bison scored 38 of their 80 total touchdowns on plays of 20 or more yards including 15 touchdowns of 50-plus yards. He was named to the 2020 class of the American Football Coaches Association's 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute.

Led by Walter Payton Award-winning quarterback Trey Lance, the Bison set an FCS record with only six turnovers lost and ranked among the FCS national leaders in scoring offense (9th, 37.3 ppg), total offense (8th, 469.5 ypg) and rushing offense (4th, 287.6 ypg).

Roehl's tight ends and fullbacks position group was not just a blocking force as the Bison rushed for a school-record 4,601 yards in 2019. The "Crew Chiefs" also combined to catch 51 passes for 677 yards and 17 of the team's 29 receiving touchdowns.

The NDSU offense was rolling again in 2021 led by the No. 2 ranked rushing offense in FCS. The Bison averaged 280.6 rushing yards per game and rushed for the third-most yards in school history (4,209) while leading all Division I teams with 6.21 yards per carry.

Roehl coached five FCS All-Americans including tight end Noah Gindorff and fullbacks Hunter Brozio, Hunter Luepke, Connor Wentz and Andrew Bonnet, who went on to the NFL as an undrafted free agent. He has coached 11 players who have combined for 15 all-conference first- or second-team honors.

Between his coaching stints at NDSU, Roehl spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons on the Moorhead High School football staff under former Bison quarterback Kevin Feeney. He was the running backs coach and junior varsity offensive coordinator in 2010 at Concordia College in Moorhead.

Roehl signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2009 as an undrafted free agent after finishing his college career as the eighth leading rusher in NDSU history with 2,512 yards. He was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® University Division first team selection and named to the 2008 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Roehl rushed for 1,053 yards and 13 TDs on 171 carries in 2008.

A 2007 Sports Network and Associated Press second team FCS All-American, Roehl rushed 207 times for 1,431 yards and 21 touchdowns in leading the Bison to a 10-1 season. He ran for a school-record 263 yards in the 27-21 win over Minnesota. Roehl led the Great West Football Conference in rushing, scoring and all-purpose yards.

A native of West Fargo, N.D., he led the Packers to a pair of North Dakota Class 3A football titles.

Roehl graduated from North Dakota State in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and earned a master's degree in health, nutrition and exercise science from NDSU in 2014.

He and his wife, Mary, have a son, Maxwell, and two daughters, Evelyn and Gabrielle.
