INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.--Amanda Grable hit three home runs, Taylor Mortensen hit a grand slam and Krista Menke tossed back-to-back shutouts as North Dakota State powered past IUPUI by the scores of 6-0 and 11-0 in a Summit League doubleheader played Friday, March 16.
North Dakota State (2-0 Summit, 18-11) and the Jaguars (1-4 Summit, 7-15) is scheduled to close out the three-game series at 11 a.m. (Central) on Saturday, March 17.
Grable, a freshman from Santee, Calif., went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and four RBI over course of two games. She hit a pair of home runs to tie a school single-game record in the second contest, a two-run shot in the first inning and a solo blast in the fourth. Grable had a solo home run in game one. The three homers pushed her season total to a team-high six.
Mortensen, a senior from Sioux Falls, S.D., hit a grand slam home run to highlight a seven-run third inning in the second game. She hammered a 1-2 pitch to left field with the bases loaded. Mortensen's grand slam was the first since Melissa Chmielewski's against Drexel on Feb. 25, 2010. She pushed her season home run total to four and had seven RBI in the two games.
North Dakota State hit six home runs against IUPUI and finished with 18 hits. Brea Konz. who went 4-for-8 with four RBI, hit her second home run of the season in the first game against the Jaguars.
Menke, a freshman from Friend, Neb., benefitted from the power surge. She limited IUPUI to five hits, all singles, over 12 innings. Menke walked only three and struck out 15 including a season-high eight strikeouts in game two. She improved to 10-6 and has three shutouts in a row.
