FARGO, N.D.--Three players each had four hits as North Dakota State rolled to an 11-2 college baseball win over Minnesota-Duluth on Thursday, May 5, at Newman Outdoor Field. Charles Magedanz was 4-for-6 including his second home run of the year, Matt Mossey was 4-for-5, and Tyrus Powe hit 4-for-4 with a triple, double and a pair of singles. North Dakota State (6-35-1) sent 10 men to the plate in a five-run third inning to break open a scoreless game. The inning started with Tim Erickson's triple to right field. It nearly got out of the park for his first home run of the season, but instead bounced off the glove of UMD right fielder Brian Bataglia as he crashed into the wall backwards. Magedanz followed with a slicing fly ball down the right field line that crept over the wall to give the Bison a 2-0 lead. Gavin Hofer later hit a sacrifice fly, Powe had an RBI single into right center, and Greg Plecki bounced a run-scoring single into right field to put the Bison up 5-0. Minnesota-Duluth starter John Leitch worked into the fourth inning, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, walking three and striking out one in the loss as the Bulldogs slipped to 22-21 on the season. North Dakota State starter Derek Ford lasted six innings and picked up the win to even his record at 2-2. Ford allowed two runs on six hits, walked four and struck out three. Erickson's third inning triple extended his hitting streak to 10 games, while Kole Zimmerman was 1-for-4 to push his hitting streak to seven games. With 18 hits in the contest North Dakota State moved its team batting average to .366 (85-for-232) in the five games against non-Division I competition this year. NDSU and UMD are scheduled to close out their two-game set Friday, May 6, with a single game starting at 1 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field. |
