FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State wrestling team puts its six-match win streak on the line against the Wyoming Cowboys Sunday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m at the Bison Sports Arena. NDSU has a 9-4 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the Western Wrestling Conference, while Wyoming is 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the WWC. It is the first time since joining the conference in 2006-07 the Bison have started 2-0. Wyoming holds a 5-4 edge in the all-time series, including a 31-6 win in Laramie last season. All three of Wyoming’s losses have come to nationally ranked opponents. Three wrestlers are ranked in the Intermat top 25 - at 125 pounds, Michael Martinez is ranked No. 12, Shane Onufer is No. 9 at 165 pounds and Joe LeBlanc is No. 9 at 184 pounds. Bison claim win over Air Force NDSU won its sixth-straight dual on Sunday defeating Air Force, 26-18. NDSU claimed six of the ten bouts in the victory with two wins coming by fall and two by major decision. Sophomore Justin Solberg won a come-from-behind decision at 125 pounds. At 149, junior Andrey Patselov started a string of three straight Bison victories with a major decison. Junior Vince Salminen pinned Wade Stowe at 157 pounds, while sophomore Tyler Johnson won a major decision at 165 pounds. After Air Force closed the gap with a pin at 174 pounds, junior Kenny Moenkedick pinned James Ciccone at 184 pounds. Sophomore Drew Ross’ 4-2 decision at 197 pounds sealed the win for the Bison. Five wrestlers set career highs for season wins Five Bison have set career highs for wins in a season. Junior Andrey Patselov has won 19 matches this year. His previous best was 15 in 2007-08. Fellow junior Geoff Martin has won eight bouts and his previous best was four during the 2007-08 season. Three sophomores have also set career highs. Tyler Johnson has 24 wins this year, exceeding the 19 he won last year. Drew Ross has won 18 matches this year, improving on the 13 he won as a freshman. Justin Solberg has notched 22 wins this season, far surpassing the seven he won a year ago. |
