Erich Hinterstocker is in his fifth season as head women's volleyball coach at North Dakota State.  He is the 10th head coach in the 45-year history of the Bison volleyball program.

Hinterstocker has orchestrated a rapid and impressive turnaround at North Dakota State.  His four-year record is 84-29 after posting three straight 20-win seasons and leading NDSU to its first appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament.

That's been a common theme for Hinterstocker, who was an assistant coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay and Alabama when those programs made their first NCAA tournament appearances.  Now he's looking to build on the success at NDSU, where attendance is steadily increasing and the Bison have a completely renovated game-day facility.

It wasn't an easy start for Hinterstocker, who inherited a 5-31 team when he was hired May 1, 2006.  Only five days remained in spring workouts and his team would play 24 of 30 matches on the road in their last year as a Division I independent.  Still, the Bison went 17-13 to complete the third best turnaround in the NCAA that year.

The 36-year-old Hinterstocker has established North Dakota State as the team to beat in The Summit League with three stellar years.  After tying for second place with a 12-4 record in 2007, the Bison went undefeated and won back-to-back regular-season championships with a 16-0 mark in 2008 and an 18-0 record in 2009.

Hinterstocker was named Summit League Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009.  NDSU has had the league's Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year all three seasons in the league in addition to Freshman of the Year honors in 2007 and 2008.

The Bison's on-court success is a product of the work being done off the court.  Hinterstocker stresses to his players the importance of preparation, including film study and detailed scouting.

The volleyball classroom hasn't overtaken the academic classroom at NDSU, however.  The Bison have earned seven straight Team Academic Awards from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, maintaining at least a 3.30 team grade-point average each year.

Hinterstocker comes from a winning background.  In two seasons as assistant coach at Alabama, the Crimson Tide compiled a 44-20
record, reached the school's first SEC championship match, and qualified for the school's first NCAA women's volleyball tournament.

In three years at Wisconsin-Green Bay, he helped the Phoenix to school record-setting win totals each year, including Green Bay's first Horizon League championship and NCAA tournament in 2003.

Prior to his time at Green Bay, Hinterstocker spent two seasons as associate head coach of the nationally ranked Marquette women's club volleyball team. He was also an assistant coach at current Division III member Alverno College in its inaugural season of volleyball.

Hinterstocker played collegiate volleyball for the Marquette men's club team and was team captain for two seasons. He was all-conference first team and tournament MVP on the 1996 championship club.

He earned a bachelor's degree in human biology (July 1998) and has a Doctor of Chiropractic degree (April 2000), both from the National College of Chiropractic.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Hinterstocker has been active in coaching at the club and high school levels. He served as the director for USA Volleyball's high performance program in Wisconsin and coached the Badger Region youth national team.

An active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, he has served on the assistant coaches committee and the professional development board.

Hinterstocker is a native of Mequon, Wis. He and his wife, Kristin, have two sons, Andrew and Landon.
