CHICAGO, Ill.--North Dakota State University offensive lineman Keith Buckman and running back Pat Paschall were honorable mention on the College Sporting News Fabulous Fifty announced on Tuesday, Dec. 29.
Paschall, a 5-foot-11 1/2 senior from St. Louis, Mo., became the first Bison player to earn first team Sports Network, Associated Press, AFCA Coaches Division I FCS All-America honors. He was also named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation FCS All-America team. Paschall was second in Missouri Valley Football Offensive Player of the Year balloting to Southern Illinois running back Deji Karim and a first-team All-MVFC selection.
Paschall finished No. 1 in rushing in the NCAA Division I FCS statistics, averaging 139.70 yards per game. Paschall was also 5th in scoring (9.6 ppg) and 9th in all-purpose yards (158.30) nationally.
Paschall rushed 27 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns in North Dakota State's 39-35 loss to Youngstown State on Nov. 21. He finished the season with 1,397 yards and 16 TDs on 207 rushes for an average of 6.75 yards per carry. It was the 10th 100-yard rushing effort for Paschall in 10 games this season and the 14th 100-yard rushing performance in his Bison career.
Paschall moved up three spots on the NDSU all-time charts into 8th position and finished his career with 2,528 yards on 399 carries and 23 touchdowns in 29 career games. He passed Doug Lloyd (2,410 yards, 1985-88), Kevin Feeney (2,473 yards, 1995-98) and former teammate Tyler Roehl (2,512 yards, 2004-08) against Youngstown State.
Buckman, a 6-foot-5, 320-pound senior from Belfield, N.D. (Belfield H.S.), started in 33 of 44 games played during career including all 11 games in 2009. A first-team All-MVFC selection, he moved from offensive tackle to guard this season. Buckman helped to pave the way for Paschall.
North Dakota State was 8th in rushing offense (219.82 ypg) and 19th in total offense (400.09 ypg) in NCAA Division I FCS statistics. In the MVFC statistics, the Bison were 1st in rushing offense (210.2 ypg) and 3rd in total offense (382.9 ypg). NDSU has had seven straight 1,000-yard rushers.
Fifty players and head coach Henry Frazier III make up the 2009 edition of the Fabulous Fifty Team for Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-American honors from College Sporting News as selected by staff members. Including the honorable mention selections, 138 student-athletes from 71 schools are represented.
Unlike other All-American teams, the CSN honor’s squad is designed to be like a real team, capable of taking the field and competing in a game. It includes everything from quarterbacks who can run or pass, often overlooked fullbacks, to a long snapper and other special teams performers.
