Carlson in 12th After First Day of Heptathlon at U.S. Championships

EUGENE, Ore. - North Dakota State senior Whitney Carlson is in 12th place after the first four events of the heptathlon at the U.S. Championships on Saturday, June 25 at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Carlson has 3,099 points through four events.  In the 100 meter hurdles, the day's first event, she placed sixth with a time of 13.91 seconds to earn 991 points.  In the high jump, she finished 13th after clearing 5 feet 0 1/2 inches for 666 points.  She was also 13th in the shot put with a throw of 32-0 for 513 points.

She posted her best finish in the final event of the day.  She finished fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.54 to earn 929 points.

The heptathlon concludes on Sunday, June 26 beginning with the long jump at 1:15 p.m. Central.  Junior Leslie Brost will also be competing in the pole vault Sunday at 2 p.m.  Carlson will be competing in the long jump at 2:40 p.m.  Senior Christine Schmaltz will run in the 800 meter final at 4:18 p.m.

The final day of competition will be televised live on Universal at 2 p.m. Central and on NBC beginning at 5 p.m. Central.
