Release: March 16, 2013
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Junior left fielder Kyle Kleinendorst registered a 3-for-4 day at the plate with three RBI, and senior reliever Simon Anderson threw 2 2/3 innings of no-hit relief to lift the North Dakota State baseball team to an 8-7 victory over Army on Saturday afternoon in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
NDSU (8-8) got hits from eight of its nine starters, and sophomore starting pitcher David Ernst threw six innings to improve to 3-2 on the season. Ernst allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks. He recorded three strikeouts.
Junior center fielder Tim Colwell registered three RBI for the Bison.
Army (4-9) scored two runs in the first inning and one in the second to build an early 3-0 lead, but the Bison responded with five runs in the bottom of the second inning to build a lead they would not relinquish.
Kleinendorst laced a bases-clearing double into the right-center field gap for three of the NDSU runs in the second. The Bison also scored on a bases-loaded walk by John Skrbec and a sacrifice fly by Colwell.
NDSU stretched the lead to 6-3 on another sacrifice fly by Colwell in the fourth inning, and the Bison went up 8-3 when Jon Hechtner scored on a double steal and Colwell dropped in an RBI single in the sixth.
Army rallied its way back into the contest with four runs in the top of the seventh, but Anderson slammed the door. The senior relieved Parker Trewin with one out in the seventh and threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, no-hit ball to earn his second save of the season. Anderson only allowed one base runner.
NDSU will conclude its eight-game Florida trip with a game against Dartmouth on Monday, Mar. 18, at 10 a.m. (CT) in Auburndale, Fla.
