Orgon Posts No. 2 Weight Throw in Nation, Breaks School Record to Open Indoor Season
Release: December 08, 2012
FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State senior thrower Casey Orgon wasted no time making a statement to open the 2012-13 indoor season on Friday evening in the Bison Sports Arena. Orgon shattered his own school record in the weight throw by just over 16 inches, and his winning mark of 63-06 (19.35m) is the No. 2 throw in the nation on the young season.
Orgon eclipsed his Dakota Duals meet record from last season by nearly eight feet. Although his weight throw mark made the biggest splash of the evening, Orgon also surpassed his shot put meet record from one year ago, throwing 52-04 (15.95m) for a runner-up finish. Orgon was not alone with his outstanding performances.
Junior Trevor Berner and senior Blake Elsen placed second and fourth, respectively, in the weight throw, and both joined Orgon in surpassing the previous meet record. Berner threw 58-01 (17.70m) - now No. 5 all-time at NDSU - and Elsen recorded a mark of 55-09.75 (17.01m).
Junior Donte Smart, competing unattached, ran away with titles in the 60m and 300m dashes. Smart clocked in at 6.85 seconds in the 60m dash to match his meet record time set last season, and his winning time of 34.84 in the 300m dash outpaced the rest of the field by over seven-tenths of a second.
Lillejord and Jesse Morrow took second and third in the pole vault behind former NDSU vaulter Shawn Francis. Francis cleared 17-00.75 (5.20m) to win the event.
Senior Lee Dhein was fourth in the 60m dash and the long jump.
The Bison won both duals in the double-dual format, topping the University of Mary, 58-56, and the University of North Dakota, 67-38.
The Dakota Duals are scheduled to be the final track meet in the Bison Sports Arena. NDSU will open the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track & Field Complex with the Bison Classic on Jan. 12.
