The Dakota Cup match play tournament was started in April 2005 by the men’s and women’s golf programs at North Dakota State University and South Dakota State University to mark the end of the schools' first season of NCAA Division I competition.
Dacotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton, Minn., is the setting for the annual event, which features individual and pairs competition over two days. It was expanded in 2010 to include the men's and women's teams from the University of North Dakota and University of South Dakota.
North Dakota State won the inaugural event, but South Dakota State won five straight before NDSU's win in 2012. The 2008 and 2013 tournaments were canceled due to weather. The 2007 tournament featured men's players only.
