Slyt, North Dakota State Women Pull Away For 65-60 Victory Over IUPUI

FARGO, N.D.--Brenda Slyt scored six of her team-high 17 points and had a pair of assists in the game's final seven minutes as North Dakota State pulled away for a 65-60 win over IUPUI in a Summit League women's basketball game played Saturday, Feb. 9, before 1,410 fans in the Bison Sports Arena.

The Bison (7-5 Summit, 12-10) won for the fifth time in six games. NDSU hosts Western Illinois (9-2 Summit, 11-11) at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in the Bison Sports Arena. The Westerwinds play South Dakota State on Saturday night.

Slyt, a 6-foot senior from Climax, Minn., was the only player in double-figures for the Bison. Her six points and two assists came during a four-minute stretched that helped North Dakota State break a 47-47 tie with 7:42 left to play.

Annika Walseth broke the deadlock with a layup to start a 12-4 run. NDSU went up 59-51 with 3:39 remaining when Jill Zaruba finished strong inside with a layup following a pass from Slyt.

Free throws were critical in the final 18 seconds after Christina Cunningham nailed a three-pointer as the Jaguars (7-5 Summit, 11-13) closed to within 61-60.

North Dakota State sophomore Inger Hodgson stepped up and connected on four free throws in the final moments. Hodgson tied a career-high with five assists. Emily Moran and Lisa Bue each had nine points with Bue notching a career best six assists.

It was a close game throughout. The Bison led 34-31 at halftime, but the lead changed hands 11 times and score was tied on six occasions.

Six-five Julia Whitted led IUPUI with a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Nicole James netted 16 points, while Jernisha Cann added 10 points. Cann also pulled down eight rebounds as the Jaguars held a 35-31 advantage on the boards.

North Dakota State shot 44.6 percent from the field compared to 42.9 percent for IUPUI. The Bison made 5 of 13 three-pointers. NDSU head coach Amy Ruley will donate $500 to the American Cancer Society as part of the WBCA's Think Pink initiative.
