ELMHURST, Ill. - North Dakota State University forward Lisa Bue has been selected as The Summit League's Women's Basketball Player of the Year in voting conducted by the league's 10 head coaches, sports information directors and selected media members.
IUPUI's Jernisha Cann collected her second consecutive Defensive Player of the Year Award and Kristin Rotert of South Dakota State was named the Sixth Woman of the Year. Western Illinois' Katy Davenport took home the league's Newcomer of the Year honor, and after guiding the Jackrabbits to the best record in the league, South Dakota State's Aaron Johnston was named Coach of the Year.
"I could not be more happy for or more proud of Lisa in being chosen as the Player of the Year. Her consistency, commitment, and production throughout her four years and most recently her senior year speaks volumes. She is very deserving of this recognition and I thank those involved in The Summit League and the selection process," said NDSU head women's basketball coach Amy Ruley, who announced prior to last Monday's game she is moving into an athletic administration and fund-raising role at the university. Ruley compiled a career record of 670-198 in 29 seasons at the Bison helm including five NCAA Division II national championships.
"Lisa's performances were instrumental in our team having an opportunity to finish in second place in the league. Her competitiveness showed in her ability to rebound with larger and stronger athletes on the floor. Her commitment to conditioning showed in her ability to run the floor and score in transition. She is a winner on and off the floor, and a perfect choice for this recognition. She set the bar high for future Bison players."
Bue, a 5-foot-10 senior from Austin, Minn. (Austin H.S.), was named Player of the Year after finishing third in the league in scoring with 16.9 points per game. She helped NDSU tie for the second-best record in the league at 12-6 and recorded six double-doubles on the season.
In 28 games this season, Bue scored more than 20 points four times, including a caeer-high 29-point effort on Dec. 30 against Montana State. On Jan. 5, she grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds against the Golden Grizzlies. The senior surpassed the 1,000-point plateau on Jan. 7 and finished with 1,245 on her career for 19th place all-time at NDSU.
In league games, Bue finished in the Top 10 in rebounding (5th, 8.0), free throw percentage (4th, .769), steals (8th, 1.89) and defensive rebounds (4th, 5.89).
Rotert, who came off the bench in all but two league games, averaged 9.2 points per game for the Jackrabbits this season to collect Sixth Woman of the Year accolades. One of the biggest threats from downtown, she was fourth in the league in both three-point field goal percentage (.433) and three-point field goals made (1.81).
Davenport takes home the Newcomer of the Year award after transferring to the Westerwinds program from Johnson County Community College. In her first year in the league, she averaged 10.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. She scored a career-high 23 points against South Dakota State on Jan. 14 in Western Hall.
Cann collects her second straight Defensive Player of the Year honor after leading the league in steals (3.11), rebounds (10.2), offensive rebounds (3.83) and defensive rebounds (6.33). She currently has 1,050 points in her three-year playing career. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year was also named Newcomer of the Year two years ago.
Johnston was named Coach of the Year after leading South Dakota State to a 23-6 overall record and 16-2 league mark. The Jacks claimed The Summit League regular-season title in just their first year in the league. After starting league play 4-2, SDSU won its last 12 games. Johnston has a career record of 193-61 (.760) in his eight-plus years at the helm of the program in Brookings. SDSU has a home-court winning streak of 22 games, which is tied for the second-longest in the nation.
